Formula

Waste-adjusted area = measured roof area × (1 + waste percentage). For a reviewed product, planning bundles = waste-adjusted area × published bundle count ÷ published coverage area, rounded up. For another product, planning bundles = waste-adjusted area ÷ current coverage per bundle, rounded up.

The calculator uses each published package ratio directly. It does not first round a derived per-bundle value, avoiding errors caused by that intermediate rounding step.

Full pallets = planning bundles ÷ entered bundles per pallet, rounded down. Loose bundles are the remainder. Pallets required = planning bundles ÷ entered bundles per pallet, rounded up.

How many bundles of shingles do I need?

Apply the chosen waste percentage to measured roof area, then use the selected product’s published package ratio or current coverage per bundle and round the package count up. The result is a planning count only; starter, ridge-cap, hip-and-ridge, and accessory products may use separate coverage.

Are all asphalt shingles three bundles per square?

No. Package ratios vary by named product. The reviewed examples on this page include products published at three bundles per roofing square, six bundles per 100 square feet, and four bundles per 96 square feet. Confirm the current specification and package wrapper for the exact product.

How many bundles of shingles are on a pallet?

There is no universal bundles-per-pallet count. It varies by manufacturer, product line, bundle weight, plant, and supplier packaging. Use the current pallet quantity for the exact product, then enter it here to plan full pallets and loose bundles.

How much waste should I add?

There is no universal percentage. Waste depends on geometry, layout, valleys, hips, cuts, product instructions, crew method, and supplier policy. Enter the percentage chosen for the actual plan and verify it before ordering.
